Alternatives to antelope horn
In a survey of 72 Chinese medicine practitioners, the most common replacement for Ling Yang Jiao (saiga antelope horn) was Gou Teng (Uncaria Ramulus cum Uncis), in combination with Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix alba) to calm the Liver and anchor yang. Ling Yang Jiao's action on the eyes was substitued by Ju Hua (Chrysanthemi Flos) and Jue Ming Zi (Cassiae Semen), its heat-draining fire-toxicity removing action by Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), and its damp-heat clearing action by Long Dan Cao (Radix Gentianae Scabrae) [1].
All of the above are plant species.
